2026 Venezuela Earthquake Response

Disaster Response • Venezuela

On Wednesday, June 24th of 2026, two strong earthquakes hit northern Venezuela, around 160 km west of its capital, Caracas. With thousands of casualties and injured people, HOT is currently mobilizing to obtain and share the necessary data so partners on the ground can provide support as soon as possible. We are coordinating with the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM), MapAction, iMMAP, and GiveDirectly.

Our latest updates:

  • Satellite and Drone Imagery
  • Remote Mapping
    • fAIr
    • Crowdsourced Mapping
  • Field Mapping
  • Data Access and Visualization

Satellite and Drone Imagery

  • Vantor has released 49 pre and post-earthquake satellite images covering from November of 2025 until June 29th of 2026, under a Creative Commons License (CC-BY-NC-4.0). The images are available on OpenAerialMap.
  • Planet also released post event images for download under CC-BY-NC-4.0
  • Currently we are not coordinating a drone mapping campaign. However, if you or someone you know is engaged in drone mapping of the affected area, we can support with processing and guidance on the use of our Drone Tasking Manager.

Remote Mapping - AI

  • Right after the earthquakes struck, we used fAIr, our AI-assisted mapping tool, to identify gaps in geospatial data and kick off a mapping campaign so partners on the ground, like MapAction and the UN International Organization for Migration, could estimate and prioritize their disaster response effort.
  • Within the first 24 hours after the event, fAIr outputs were delivered to key early responders, providing data on: building density, AI-assisted building digitization, and building damage predictions.

  • Through Mapswipe, we are now crowdsourcing to validate the building damage predictions. Volunteers are focusing on reviewing the quality of the predictions both by fAIr and Microsoft AI For Good Lab.
  • Our first batch of human-validated damage assessment has been completed for 3 cities: Caraballeda, La Guaira and Caracas. To our knowledge, this is the most complete human-validated damage assessment dataset so far.

Remote Mapping- Crowdsourced

Through the HOT Tasking Manager, volunteer mappers and validators from all around the world have been busy improving the pre-earthquake baseline for buildings. In less than a week, 451 people have mapped around 53k buildings.

Field Mapping

We have launched a ChatMap campaign for people on the ground to map the location of damaged structures along with photos or video.

Data Access and Visualization

Through our Portal, you will find available data and digital maps of areas of interest, buildings, building density, healthcare sites and more. Plus:

Data is also available through HDX:

Other Community Initiatives

We are aware that people on the affected areas are also involved in launching many other mapping initiatives. While aren't collaborating directly with them, we want to share them here in case they are useful for more people:
